Julien Birban Levy was born in Paris, where he studied Philosophy. He then worked as a musician—mostly in punk rock bands—before moving to New York and shifting his focus to photography and filmmaking. He worked as a writer, photographer, and director in New York for seven years, and now lives in Tokyo.

Julien Birban Levy has written and directed more than ten short films, two documentary films, and has directed music videos for highly influential bands in France, Japan, and the United States. He has also directed fashion films for clients including Chanel, Miu Miu, Maison Kitsuné, and Fendi. In parallel, he is the author of two novels, five photography books, and has held ten solo exhibitions across Europe, America, and Asia.

Whether in fashion or music videos, Julien Birban Levy’s films are driven by strong narratives, highly emotional framing, and references to French and Asian cinema. His portrayal of female characters has been widely praised over the years. His background in the punk scene also remains visible, through a radical use of music, uncompromising themes, and rebellious characters.

His first feature film NIKO will be released late 2026.

パリに生まれる。プロバンス大学とソルボンヌ大学で哲学を専攻。サルトル、ショーペンハウアー、カミュを学び、ニーチェに深い影響を受ける。同時期に行っていたパンクバンドのワールドツアーのため大学を中退。そこで撮影した写真をまとめた写真展で、フランスの出版社ARCHIBOOKS社からのオファーを受け写真集『Solipsisme』を刊行、写真家としてのキャリアをスタートする。同写真集をきっかけに対面した女優アンナ・カリーナから薫陶を受け写真家としての活動をしながら映画監督を目指す。

28歳でニューヨークに渡る。当時制作していたアートワークがシャネル（日本法人）代表のリチャード・コラス氏の目にとまり、水原希子を主演に迎えた短編映画『Beauty is you Chaos is me』を2014年に発表、CHANEL NEXUS HALLで同タイトルの個展を開催。ヌメロトーキョーが掲載権を購入。同年にニューヨークのGaris＆Hahnギャラリーマリー・ゲイリス氏とソフィ・ハーン氏のオファーで個展『WITHOUT YOU I’M NOTHING』を発表。

2016年に小松菜奈を主演に迎え短編映画『明日なんてない』を発表、ユーロスペースをはじめとする映画館で上映。同年にシャネル（グローバル）とハーパーズバザージャパンのコラボレーションムービーを中条あやみを主演に迎え制作。

2017年に短編映画『Rihanna Secret Show』では若手インディーズ女優をアサインした作品ながら高い評価を得てファッションメディアNOWNESSが独占配信権を購入。

2017年に日本に渡る。 2018年に短編映画をエル・ジャポンの出資により『Things to Scream at the Sun』を制作。ローレン・サイを主演に迎える。同年にピアニストのアリス＝紗良・オットのMVとツアードキュメンタリーを制作（その後、ユニバーサルミュージックが版権を購入）。

2019年に志磨遼平のバンド、ドレスコーズのミュージックビデオ『The End Of The World Party』を制作。主演に趣里、出演に向里祐香、志磨遼平。その後4本のミュージックビデオをドレスコーズのために制作。

2020年にコロナ禍をきっかけに小説の執筆を開始。処女作『LES DOULEURS PREMIERES』を書き上げる。

2021年に写真集『No One Is Here For You』*をリブロアルテ社から出版、初版1000部完売。出演に池田エライザ、見上愛、趣里、渡部豪太など。KYOTOGRAPHIEの招聘作家展示、BOOKMARCの個展でオリジナルプリントを発表。同年に短編映画『First date last date』を制作。主演に渡部豪太、ソイ・キムを迎え発表、ファッションメディアNOWNESSが独占配信権を購入。

2022年にシャネル（日本法人）とマダムフィガロのコラボレーションムービーを小松菜奈を主演に迎え制作。

2023年に小説『LES DOULEURS PREMIERES』を出版。フランスの新聞『フィガロ』の人気コーナー「ポートレート」にて全15段にわたりインタビューが掲載される。フランスの10都市でサイン会を開催する他ブックフェアにも参加。Prix Aznavour des Mots d'Amour（アズナブール小説賞）の最終候補に選ばれる。

同年に志磨遼平のバンド、ドレスコーズのミュージックビデオ『Universe』を制作。閉店直前の大阪のキャバレーで撮影したことが高く評価されMVとしては異例の映画館立川シネマシティでプレミア上映を行う。

2024年にシャネル（日本法人）とマダムフィガロのコラボレーションムービーを二階堂ふみを主演に迎えパリで撮影。 初の長編映画『NIKO』は、2026年後半に公開予定です。
